Contest and We Care Arts Spring Auction 2017

Are you looking for an auction to participate in this spring?  Gather your friends and make plans to attend We Care Arts’ annual Spring Auction on Friday, March 10 at the Presidential Banquet Center. The fun-filled evening will feature a terrific dinner, and a silent auction with dozens of fabulous gift baskets from which to choose.

This year’s live auction will include a chance to bid on a beautiful rug, designed by Kenna Seabrook, a WCA high school client from Stivers High School and created by Bockrath Flooring. Kenna had the winning design selected by the Bockrath team!

Gina, the skilled rug artisan, created this amazing custom rug using Kenna's beautiful design. This gorgeous rug will be on display at Town & Country Shopping Center until March 10th, the day of We Care Arts Spring Auction. Bockrath made a smaller version of the rug to give to Kenna, she was excited to receive the rug and will be putting it in her room.
Do you remember reading one of the previous blogs last month regarding this exciting contest sponsored by Bockrath Flooring?  In case you didn't see it yet, it explains the process of the contest and what happened last year.  Here is the link to that blog for your review, http://wecarearts.blogspot.com/2017/01/up-coming-spring-auction-to-we-care-arts.html.

Also included in the live auction will be a Las Vegas getaway vacation, and much more!
Last year, the auction raised over $60,000, which helped over 1,400 adults and children with disabilities realize their personal potential through art. Call We Care Arts at 937-252-3937 for tickets and more information or go to our website at http://wecarearts.org/about-events.php.

A Night To Shine

We want to make sure you are all aware of this amazing and exciting event some of our clients here at We Care Arts enjoy going to once a year called Night to Shine.
Night to Shine is a special Prom night of dancing and socializing sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation.  Tim Tebow is a two-time college football national champion, first round National Football League draft pick, and college Heisman trophy winner. Tim Tebow is currently signed to play professional baseball with the New York Mets and is a college football analyst for the SEC Network.

Night to Shine is an unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love, for people with special needs ages 14 and older.  This year the event was held on February 10, 2017.  375 churches from around the world, hosted Night to Shine, for 75,000 honored guests, through the support of 150,000 volunteers!

Night To Shine was held  in our local area in Troy, Vandalia and Mason Ohio.  We had clients that attended and they said that they had a great time!  The event was a prom night that they will never forget! Walking the red carpet, enjoying the royal treatment and dancing the night away!

This foundation, and all of their outreach initiatives, was primarily created to show God’s love to children around the world.  At the end of this special night was the best time to show God’s love when every guest was crowned King or Queen of the Prom.  This is a perfect way to remind people how special they are in His eyes.

Let's Live Healthier!

February is National Cancer Prevention Month so this is the perfect time to spread the word and knowledge of cancer prevention.  It is our goal here at We Care Arts to contribute to the health of every individual we serve plus people throughout the community in the best way we can.  We know that the clients, volunteers, and staff here along with people we network with might be fighting cancer or working to prevent cancer.  So we wanted to share some of the important ways to best improve your health.

Guidelines for Cancer Prevention
1. Choose mostly plant foods, limit red meat and avoid processed meat.

You already know that limiting high-calorie treats is a good idea. But did you know that if you make an effort to prepare meals focused around vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans, you’ll help fortify your body against cancer?

That’s what AICR’s groundbreaking expert report concluded. The report also found a convincing scientific link between red and processed meats and colon cancer, so it’s a good idea to limit red meat to 18 ounces of lean cuts per week and avoid processed meats like ham, hot dogs, sausage and bacon

2.     Be physically active every day in any way for 30 minutes or more.

Being physically active for at total of least 30 minutes a day -- whether you’re walking, vacuuming, dancing or scuba diving – will lower your risk for colon cancer and possibly several other cancers as well.

3.     Aim to be a healthy weight throughout life.

It’s the third key element that will help protect against chronic disease. In fact, carrying excess weight has been linked to six different types of cancer.

We also want to let you know about our amazing program we started last year called Art on a Cart. Once a week our instructor, George, goes to the Premier Health Miami Valley South’s cancer unit for Art on a Cart. He goes into the unit with art supplies on a rolling cart and offers the patients the opportunity to do some artwork while they are getting their chemo treatment. They can do things like making bracelets or printing watercolor landscapes, and many other projects! We have found that the act of creating art is a wonderful distraction from the difficult situation the patient is facing. Often the friend or family member sitting with the patient also does a project. It gives them something fun to do to make the time seem to move a bit faster. It makes our day a million times better knowing that we can help people have a positive experience while going through chemo treatments.

Happy Monday Morning!

We have a busy day on Mondays, filled with fun, artistic activities, laughter and joy at our studio.  Part of the fun is our small group of lady friends that are here in the morning. Coming to us through the area’s developmental disabilities group, they have formed very close relationships and really enjoy each other’s company.

Part of their bond is in their long conversations with one another about their common interests in movies and cartoons and the favorite ones they like.  We Care Arts provide them with a great social outlet since it is not as easy for them to get out of the house as it is for most others.

The projects the ladies do here are things that they are interested in.  Art teacher Jess tries to adapt the activities to their individual abilities so their projects are something that they enjoy doing and would also sell at our 2 gift shops.  Some of their projects include knitting, glazing pottery,  another is painting and another is making hair accessories.

While they are here, the ladies laugh together and tease each other and talk about their favorite movies and TV shows. Even when they arrive in the morning upset over something that has happened to them, they leave here feeling happy after being among friends in a caring environment.

We are so happy that we can provide a supportive and caring place for them to come and enjoy themselves!
